Why is my hair not holding a curl?! How to Make Your Curls Last Longer...
We’ve all been there—spending time curling our hair, only for it to fall flat a few hours later.
Ugh 🤦♀️ But don’t worry, you’re not alone.
So many of my clients have faced this same issue, and I’ve got the solution for you.
Scroll through for 5 tips and tricks that can make a HUGE difference in keeping those curls in place all day long!
Here’s what might be going wrong:
❌ You’re starting with hair that’s too clean or silky.
❌ You’re skipping the right prep products for hold.
❌ Your curling iron isn’t at the right heat setting for your hair type.
❌ You’re not letting the curls cool properly to set.
But don’t worry!
So many of my clients have struggled with the same thing, and these 5 tips and tricks make such a difference!
- Swap your iron
If your iron is old, damaged, super low quality, or the iron barrel is too large, all of these can affect how well your hair holds! Investing in a higher quality iron ¼ - ½ inch smaller can significantly affect how long your curls last! Our favorite brand of curling irons are either GHD, Bioionic, or Babyliss.
- Prep your hair
Using a heat protectant with hold, mousse, light-hold hairspray, or dry texture spray before curling your hair can increase the longevity of your curls while adding texture and volume. My favorite product for this is Redken Big Blowout Heat Protection Jelly, Redken Full Volume Mousse, or Redken Thermal Spray.
- Ensure you're curling your hair correctly
Curling from the ends up puts most of the curl at the bottom, making it more likely to fall out. Start curling from the middle of the strand for longer-lasting curls. Sectioning your hair ensures even heat for better results!
- Your hair is too clean or too dirty
For long-lasting curls, your hair should be clean enough to avoid excess oil but have enough texture to hold the curl. Using dry shampoo before curling helps control oil and adds grip. My favorite is Redken Dry Texture Spray. This product has dry shampoo and texture spray in the formula to give texture/grippiness to your hair, and oil absorption power to make your style last longer.
- You’re not letting your curls set
Letting curls cool completely before brushing or touching them helps them last longer. For extra hold, pin or cup curls as they cool to set the shape before styling.
